Sailing & boats

Sailing & boats

Three boats since 0.4.0: a raft you carry in your pack and row anywhere, and the dhow and trade cog that a town builds at its dockyard and that sail on the wind. Wood piers take you out over shallow water.

On board

  • Raft: a 20 kg item in your pack. Put it in the water anywhere and row it. It has no sails, but the wind adds up to 7 to its speed.
  • Dhow and cog: they sail on the wind. Their sails turn with it, and the compass shows where it blows from (see Wind). Pick your sail colour.
  • Crew: friends can ride along. The captain chooses who may come aboard, and the crew can take the helm. No friendly fire inside a party.
  • The hold shows on your Inventory page, and anyone aboard can use it. It uses a slot grid like chests: click to move a stack, right-click to move one, or drag.
  • Captain knocked out: the boat moors and its hold opens to anyone for 20 minutes.
  • Running aground: hit a beach above 45% of top speed and you stick. Hold S to pull free.
  • Crossing regions: a boat keeps 70% of its speed when it crosses into the next region.
  • Rowing astern (backwards) no longer beats the wind since 0.4.1. Rowing in calm water is unchanged.
  • Fishing works from a boat.
  • Rot: an unused boat starts rotting after the time in the table. A fully rotted boat breaks up 7 days later, and its hold spills.
  • Settings can turn off the sailing tips. Storm warnings always show.

Piers and building over water

  • A wood pier costs 5 planks and 2 logs. It starts at the water's edge and reaches out over water up to 5 m deep.
  • Every other piece stops where the sea gets 5 m deep. Lakes and rivers have no such limit.

The dockyard: a town project

Dhows and cogs are built at a town's dockyard. The town raises it together, stage by stage.

  • Where: a footprint of 27 × 45 m on your town's land. The log pile end stands on dry land, and the far end needs water at least 2 m deep.
  • Who: only the founder or an officer can place it, one per town. Anyone can deliver materials. Town members work it by holding F on site with a hammer (forged and well-used ones too, since 0.4.1), and more hands work faster.

Wind

  • Day and night: from 10:00 to 19:00 game time the breeze blows onto land. From 23:00 to 09:00 it blows out to sea.
  • The wind lane: a strong lane of wind circles the world once every 3 days.
  • Gales blow at the world's outer edge (the storm line on the map), and storms bring stronger wind.
  • The rest is for sailors to learn: the dev says the wind follows patterns you can learn at sea.

Weather and drowning

  • Weather: clouds, rain, thunderstorms, and snow in cold regions and the sea beside them. Dry lands get clouds instead of rain. A setting turns the rain and snow visuals down.
  • Shallow coastal seas can be walked in (again since 0.4.1).
  • Drowning only happens in open deep water. Swimming drains 1.5 stamina a second (about 67 s from full). Then you have 15 s of breath, and after that you lose 10% of your max health every second. Reaching water you can stand in refills your breath at once.
  • Hornet swarms on the jungle isle give up when you reach deep water (see Creatures).
