New lands

New lands

The Horizon Update (0.4.0) adds three lands across the sea: a cold continent in the north, a hot continent in the south and the lawless jungle isle in the east, plus islands. They stay off the world map until you reach them, so this wiki doesn't map them either: go and find them.

The three lands

LandWhat it's likeBossFound there
Cold continent
north
Tundra and boreal taiga, snowfields and forest groves. Snow falls here and on the sea beside it.Rimetusk (tundra)Frostbloom (tundra, at least two regions from the sea), cloudberries (tundra), lingonberries and pine nuts (taiga)
Hot continent
south
Red rock badlands with buttes and deep canyons, salt flats with brine pools, palm oases and thorn scrub. Dry land: clouds, but no rain.Dune Tyrant (badlands)Sunstone (the lowest badland veins), rock salt (salt flat stone), dates (oases), prickly pears (thorn scrub)
Jungle isle
east · lawless
Rainforest, giant trees and mangrove swamps, and terrifying creatures. Lawless land: no towns, PvP always on.Jadecoil (rainforest)Jade Seams (rainforest and mangroves), Moon Orchid (rainforest, at night), bananas and cacao (rainforest), mangrove crabs (mangroves)
IslandsSmall islands next to the new continents, capes off three coasts, and 16 islands out in the open sea.--Richer rare deposits and more ruins than the mainland

From the devlog and the game's developer dev · 0.4.0 · may change. Huckleberries, chanterelles and bilberries grow in the new lands too: those are left for players to find.

Finding them

  • Your atlas: a new land stays off your world map until you reach it, then it's added to your atlas. The map shows ? over sea you haven't explored, and a storm line marks the world's edge.
  • Getting there: row a raft from any shore, or sail a dhow or cog from a town's dockyard. Boats keep most of their speed when they cross into the next region. Sailing
  • Swimming is risky: open deep water drowns you once your stamina and breath run out (about 67 s of swimming, then 15 s of breath). Drowning
  • Low trees: you can push through trees whose leaves hang low, slowly.
  • Towns: you can found one town and belong to one town on each server, wherever it stands. The jungle isle takes no Town Halls. Towns

New rare deposits

DepositWhere, and the catch
FrostbloomTundra, at least two regions away from the sea
SunstoneThe lowest veins in the badlands; needs a bronze pickaxe or better
Moon OrchidRainforest; open only from 18:00 to 06:00 game time
Sea GlassStone near the shore of islands close to the coast; never on the mainland
Jade OreJade Seams on rocky ground in the jungle isle's rainforest and mangroves, at least one per region. A seam holds 3 ore and regrows 1 every 6 hours. Needs a steel pickaxe or better. Jadesteel

No recipe uses Frostbloom, Sunstone, Moon Orchid or Sea Glass yet dev · 0.4.0 · may change. Islands have richer rare deposits.

Lawless land

The jungle isle and its islet are lawless:

  • No Town Halls.
  • Buildings weather away: they get 12 hours of grace, then wear down over 3 days (wood) or 4 days (stone and metal). There is no 1% floor. A broken piece drops a quarter of its cost as debris.
  • PvP is always on, and town claims don't protect you there.
  • Death drops your whole Pack, including tools and weapons, worn armor and bags. Your gold stays with you.
  • The game warns you before you cross in and when you arrive.

Music

  • Area themes play only in their own land: new day and night music for the Ashlands, Groves, Fens and Jungle, and a night theme for the Dunes. Day themes play at dawn, day and dusk; night themes at dusk and night. They take turns with the older tracks.
  • Walking into a themed land after 90 s or more of quiet starts its theme early.
  • Boss music starts when the boss is after anyone within 120 m: the Cinder Colossus, the Jadecoil and the Dune Tyrant have their own.
  • Player combat music plays while you've traded blows with another player in the last 20 s. A boss theme wins over it.
  • After a fight the theme holds 8 s, then fades over 4 s. There are 4 to 9 minutes of silence between tracks.
  • Composers: Lab of the Ocean (Warzone, Emberstone Hearths, Cricket Choir, Bamboo Bridges, Mosciitos, Bog, Jungle, Jungle Night, Ember Core Catastrophe, Jade Coil, Sciilcheck) and JTrent, called JamesT in the devlog (Dunes Night, Dune Tyrant).
